Our treatment method

During the first session, the therapist will carry out a postural assessment as well as range of motion assessment and pain assessment when needed in order to choose the appropriate treatment plan for you. These will be reassessed as well at the beginning of each follow up session if needed.

The treatment method consists of advanced myofascial release techniques, trigger point work and advanced stretching techniques, combined and executed using a whole body approach whereby the whole body is considered as one interrelated unit and included in the treatment as necessary. This increases the effectiveness of the treatment and it produces long lasting results.

Using the Low back pain protocol as work foundation, most of the work will be concentrated on the back (including upper and lower back), gluteal area and hip flexors, although as mentioned above the whole body will be addressed as needed. The therapist’s approach to the treatment and choice of techniques will be depending on the nature of the presentation, its severity and the physical characteristics of the client.

The therapist’s focus will be reducing the pain levels, as well as releasing secondary structures that might be contributing to the development of the presentation.

Understanding the Lower back

The low back, also called lumbar area, is the area of the back that starts below the ribcage. Nerves, bones, muscles and ligaments work together to provide support, strength and flexibility. These structures are also vulnerable to injury and pain.

Almost all of us have experienced it or will experience it at some level throughout our life and it’s one of the top causes of missed work.

Most acute low back pain results from injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints or discs.

Symptoms might range from a dull ache to a shooting or stabbing pain, sometimes making it hard to move or stand up straight. Pain and other symptoms might be contained to the lower back area or move from the lower back into the gluteal area or back of the thigh, sometimes into the lower back and feet.

Two of the most common types of low back pain

– Mechanical pain: The most common type of low back pain, mechanical pain is pain from the muscles, ligaments, bones or joints (facet joints, sacroiliac joints) in and around the spine. It’s normally felt in the lower back, gluteal area and thighs. Usually influenced by loading the spine and it can feel different based on motion (forwards, backwards, twisting), activity, standing, sitting or resting.

Radicular pain: can occur when a nerve root becomes impinged or inflamed and it might follow a nerve root path down into the gluteal area or leg. The sensation is sharp, burning or electric and it can be linked to weakness or numbness.

There are many other sources of low back pain (inflammatory conditions; neuropathic; pain that refers from an organ, like kidneys or bowels; myelopathic, tumors, etc.)

Described by duration we can divide low back symptoms in 3 groups:

Acute: Pain that comes in suddenly as a result of an injury or tissue damage. Normally subsides within a few days or weeks as the body heals. Treatment is advised to prevent reoccurring.

Sub-acute: Pain that lasts between 6 weeks to 3 months. Usually due to muscle strain or joint pain that persists.

Chronic: Persistent pain that lasts for more than 3 months.

In every case, low back treatment improves the healing process, reduces the chances of a flear-up and prevents the development of chronic back pain.
