Our treatment method

During the first session, the therapist will carry out a postural assessment as well as range of motion assessment and pain assessment when needed in order to choose the appropriate treatment plan for you. These will be reassessed at the beginning of each follow up session as well as needed.

The treatment method consists of advanced myofascial release techniques, trigger point work and advanced stretching techniques, combined and executed using a whole body approach whereby the whole body is considered as one interrelated unit and included in the treatment as necessary. This increases the effectiveness of the treatment and it produces long lasting results. It also means that the treatment feels relaxing.

There are several muscles located in then hip and pelvis area that, when irritated, refer pain down the leg, either back or front of the leg. For this reason we use a combination of the hip & pelvis and the leg, knee, foot protocols.

The therapist will use the initial assessment mentioned above to identify the muscles and structures that might be causing the symptoms and will concentrate most of the work on these areas although as mentioned above the whole body will be addressed as needed.

The therapist’s focus will be releasing the pain levels and any other related symptoms the patient is presenting with, like in this case numbness and tingling down the leg, as well as releasing secondary structures that might be contributing to the development of the presentation.

Understanding Leg pain

Bellow we look at the most common causes for leg pain and other problems.

1. The leg is one of the most clear examples of how referred pain occurs in our body. Although muscles that are part of the leg can directly cause pain in the leg when injured or irritated and we also address these in our clinic, a great number of cases of pain experienced down the leg and foot are a result of referred pain radiating from a muscle located in the hip and pelvis area and not in the leg itself. These muscles with referred pain down the leg can cause a lot of pain and weakness.

2. Injury or strain to any of the leg muscles can also cause pain and malfunction. These happen due to an imbalance between the demand exerted on the tissue and the capability of the tissue to satisfy the demand.

3. Like a domino effect, restrictions in muscles and structures in hip & pelvis, thigh, calf or foot also compromise the gait balance and therefore the functioning of the leg, knee, ankle and foot and therefore the whole body!

Special mention here as well for the knee joint, which has most of our body weight above it. The knee is quite a vulnerable joint to injury, with patellofemoral pain (pain in and around the patella at the front of the knee) being the most common problem for amateur runners. This is because it carries a lot of weight of course, but also due to its anatomical properties (designed to only move in one plane, flexion and extension), unlike the ankle for example that can rotate in all directions. Any restriction either above or underneath the knee that may pull it in or out of that plane can compromise the right functioning of the joint and cause pain and other problems.

4. Last but not least, nerves can also cause pain and other symptoms down the leg, like numbness or weakness. The sciatic nerve, anywhere along its path to the foot is a very regular visitor in our treatment room.

It’s the job of the therapist to assess the characteristics of the symptoms, as well as to identify, release and re-balance the structures that are causing the pain.
